'The Collective' steampunk USB drive is the stocking stuffer Jules Verne always wanted

Miffed you didn't buy that $300 8GB steampunk USB drive we shared over the summer? Well, the good news is if you've got $395 worth of shillings lying around, Will Rockwell's 16GB steampunk USB drive christened "The Collective" is yours for the taking. Besides its J.J. Abrams-like name, particularly cool details to highlight include a brass manifold featuring four coolant pipes, a large framed cabochon which acts as a service light, and a faux-gauge made from a domed cover and watch hand. A storage tank serves as a cap for the drive and there's even a tiny plaque bearing Mr. Rockwell's engraved John Hancock placed smack dab in the middle. Last but certainly not least, the elaborate thumbdrive ships with a velvet platform and a glass museum case, so that all who visit may bask in its craftsmanship and finally see the rusted version owned by that Victorian-poser down the block as the tetanus carrier it really is.

BridgeURL lets you send a tour of several websites in one link

Sometimes you may want to send someone a whole list of websites to look at. Maybe you even want them to look at the sites in a given sequence, like when you're sharing the results of a search for a new car or a vacation spot.

BridgeURL is a fairly elegant service that accepts a list of links, and spits out a single bit.ly link. When you click this link, you're taken to the first website on the list, but it has subtle semi-transparent overlays on both sides. The left one leads to the previous site on the chain, while the right leads to the next site. (They're not semi-transparent on the screenshot because when you hover over them, they turn solid.)

There's also a bottom bar, but it's fairly unobtrusive. There were no banners or pop-ups as far as I was able to see. The only annoyance with the service is that for some odd reason, it forces you to feed it URLs starting with http:// or https:// - meaning, you can't write "downloadsquad.com" or even "www.downloadsquad.com". I have no idea why it's not smart enough to figure out the http:// on its own. Other than that, it's a fairly handy service.

Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects

With the release of OpenKinect, an open-source library that lets PC users interact with Microsoft's depth-sensing and environment-recognizing Kinect, crazy-cool applications of the technology are beginning to emerge. In this video (embedded after the break), one creative hacker mashes together a bunch of open-source libraries to create... well, a modern-day equivalent of HAL 9000.

Using OpenKinect as an interface, OpenCV to process the captured images, CMU Sphinx to recognize speech and Festvox to synthesize speech, one hacker was able to create a program that recognizes random real-world objects and communicates with a user in real time. He notes in the video's description that it's just a 'proof of concept', but one wonders how long it actually took him to cobble it together because the video was uploaded only a few days after OpenKinect's release.

The most exciting prospect though, in my opinion, is that Microsoft must surely be working on their own in-house tools (and games!) to better utilize Kinect's potential. The cocky work of lone cowboy coders is one thing, but next-generation interfaces from powerhouses like Microsoft are something else.
