Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game

Sticks is another one of those rare games where the intro is actually worth watching. It introduces you to office worker Bob, who is basically a wage slave fantasizing about a better existence.

Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says "Sticks." This is where the game starts.

Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob -- but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you're done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.

The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn't get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.

DirecTV, Comcast, Vudu could start offering 'premium VOD' $30 movie rentals in April

Despite the questionable appeal of watching movies two months after they come out in theaters for $30 a pop, The Hollywood Reporter reports Warner Bros., Sony, Fox and Universal are going ahead with their premium video on-demand scheme. According to the always helpful unnamed insiders, DirecTV will be launch the service nationally at the end of April, with Walmart-backed Vudu and a regional launch by Comcast soon after. Company Town mentions movies like The Adjustment Bureau, Paul or Just Go With It could be among launch titles. There's no word on DRM although apparently Paramount has taken a pass specifically due to piracy concerns -- theater owners aren't happy either -- so we'll just wait and see if the quality of scene rips suddenly make a jump by this time next month. Either way, expect some new variation of Gregor and his lap giraffe to make an appearance soon.

Google tightening control of Android, insisting licensees abide by 'non-fragmentation clauses'?

A storm seems to be brewing over the realm of Android development. Bloomberg's Businessweek spies have received word from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" that Google is actively working to gain control and final say over customizations of its popular mobile OS. That might not sound unreasonable, and indeed Google's public position on the matter is that it's seeking to stabilize the platform and ensure quality control, but it does mark a major shift from where Android started -- an open source OS that was also open to manufacturers and carriers to customize as they wish. Not so anymore, we're told, as apparently Mountain View is now demanding that content partnerships and OS tweaks get the blessing of Andy Rubin before proceeding. The alternative, of course, is to not be inside Google's warm and fuzzy early access program, but then, as evidenced by the company recently withholding the Honeycomb source code, you end up far behind those among your competitors who do dance to Google's pipe.

Things have gotten so heated, in fact, that complaints have apparently been made to the US Department of Justice. They may have something to do with allegations of Google holding back Verizon handsets with Microsoft's Bing on board, ostensibly in an effort to trip up its biggest search competitor. Another major dissatisfaction expressed by those working with Android code is that Google needs an advance preview of what is being done in order to give it the green light -- which, as noted by a pair of sources familiar with Facebook's Android customization efforts, isn't sitting well with people at all. Google and Facebook are direct competitors in the online space and it's easily apparent how much one stands to gain from knowing the other's plans early. As to the non-fragmentation clauses in licenses, Andy Rubin has pointed out those have been there from the start, but it's only now that Google is really seeking to use them to establish control. The future of Android, therefore, looks to be a little less open and a little more Googlish -- for better or worse. As Nokia's Stephen Elop puts it:

"The premise of a true open software platform may be where Android started, but it's not where Android is going."

Firefox 4 manages 7 million downloads in first 24 hours, still going strong

In its first 24 hours of public availability, Firefox 4 was downloaded around 7 million times, beating out 3.5's tally of 5 million, but falling short of Firefox 3's monumental 8 million.

Mozilla's new browser has maintained more than 4000 downloads per minute for the last 24 hours, peaking at around 9000 per minute in the late afternoon yesterday, when all of Europe and the Americas were awake. There was also a surge over night as Asia woke up, with huge download spikes caused by Japan and India. China, despite having the largest population of Internet surfers, has seen relatively slow uptake, and is currently third in Asia, some way behind India.

The United States registered the largest number of downloads in 24 hours, with about 1.5 million. Germany was second with around 600,000, which, considering Germany's population of 82 million, also represents the most Firefox downloads per capita. The U.K. has seen fairly poor adoption of the browser, registering just 235,000 downloads in the first 24 hours.

Google Chooses Its Fiber-Networked City Of The Future: Kansas City

Back in February 2010, Google announced its plans to build out a fiber-optic network for a city in the United States, promising connection speeds around 1Gb/s ? 100 times faster than the broadband most people are used to. The announcement led 1,100 cities to apply, and today Google has just announced the winning city: Kansas City, Kansas. For you lucky Kansas City residents, Google has launched an informational page outlining what their plans are (it also provides some background about Google itself). The site's FAQ says that Google hopes to begin building the network by the end of the year and that service should begin in the first quarter of 2012, with plans to roll out to all communities in Kansas City.

I'm at Columbia Business School tonight to talk with Jack Dorsey, a founder of both Twitter and Square. As I wrote earlier today:

It?s really more of an interview, with questions from the students and the audience at large. The theme of the lecture is ?Social Disruption.? Both Twitter and Square are disruptive startups in the media/communications and payments industries, respectively. We?ll get into how each company disrupts the current order of things and creates new value in the process. Square lets anyone accept credit cards, lowering the barriers to creating a business. Twitter lowers the barrier to communication, opening up a whole new way to consume information. I want to know what lessons he?s learned from both experiences, and how the early rough days of Twitter helped him launch Square with so far hardly a hiccup. I also want to know what he thinks about larger players like Intuit rushing in after Square.

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:

• New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
• Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
• User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
• Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.

All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla's noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4's meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Researchers manage 448Gbps on commercial hardware, coming soonish to a trunk near you

We've seen many a theoretical demonstration of lightning-quick networks, but most use some rather special purpose hardware -- like lasers and such that your average ISP doesn't have hanging around. However, this new benchmark of 448Gbps is a little more impressive because it was achieved on commercial fiber hardware. A few teams of researchers were the ones shoveling the bits, including the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, the National Inter-university Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), and good 'ol Ericsson. It's said to be the world's first transmission line operating at that speed, and what's most impressive is that it'll be tested on further network segments in the coming months ahead of becoming an actual product at some point in the not-too-distant future. Not soon enough.

Angry Birds Rio coming to the Android Market this week

When the Amazon Appstore launched, one of the big stories was that it offered an exclusive copy of the new game Angry Birds Rio, the latest installment of the popular Rovio series. 

It seems as if that exclusivity is coming to an end this week, as Rovio announced Angry Birds Rio will be coming to the Android Market for free and will be ad-supported. They say as soon as they fix a couple bugs, it will be released. If you're one who cares about ads, the ad-free version is still available over at Amazon. 

This is great news for international users who can't access Amazon's Appstore yet. Don't worry, you'll be able to play Angry Birds again soon! [Facebook]

BlackBerry PlayBook FAQ confirms native email, calendar and contacts apps, just not at launch

The native app situation on the BlackBerry PlayBook has been one point of contention since the device was first announced, and there's still a fair bit of confusion even now, less than a month from launch. We now have a fairly definitive answer for one key question, however, although it may not be the one you were hoping for. According to an official FAQ provided for a Verizon webinar, the PlayBook will indeed be getting native email, calendar and contacts apps in a "future software update," but you'll have to make do without them initially. That means either relying on the PlayBook's web browser, or using the "Bridge" mode to access the apps on your BlackBerry smartphone. So, the PlayBook may not technically be "reliant" on a BlackBerry, but it is certainly handy to have one around.

Chrome 11 goes beta, adds hardware-accelerated 3D CSS and HTML5 speech input

Google Chrome 11 has arrived on the beta channel, and while there's not a lot reported in Google's official release post there have been a few important additions. As we've come to expect from Chrome version bumps, both the Webkit core and V8 JavaScript engine have been updated and tweaked for better performance. GPU-accelerated 3D CSS transforms and compositing are now enabled as well, allowing for richer, smoother Web visuals.

Chrome 11 adds HTML5 Speech Recognition, improving accessibility, and no doubt leading to Web apps which mimic certain mobile apps like Google Voice Search. Chrome 11's Speech Recognition worked quite well in our testing, and you can give it a go yourself by visiting this demo page.

Mac users will also find that Tab Overview has been enabled by default, Chrome 11 also includes improved support for the newer MacBooks' accelerometer. Finally, there's an experimental New Tab Page designed for touchscreens which you can enable on about:flags.

Climsy shares images on your clipboard via Dropbox and Imageshack

Every now and then, there's screen capture or image you stumble across that you just have to share. Climsy is a nice, simple Windows program which makes the process dead simple. It works the way FluffyApp does: take a screenshot or right-click and copy an image to your clipboard in any application, and Climsy will file it to a folder of your choosing or upload to either your Dropbox account, Imageshack, or to Climsy's own server. There's a configurable setting for automatic uploading, and Climsy will report back with a link to your file once the transfer has completed (which you can see above).

Right now, Climsy only supports full screen (Prt Scrn) or single application window captures (Alt+Prt Scrn). We'd like to see a selectable region capture, a la Screenpresso, added to round things out. We'd also like to see support for short URLs, just in case some of our links get a bit lengthy.

Climsy is available as an installer and as a portable application, and it's totally free for both personal and commercial use. It's incredibly lightweight, too -- barely clocking more than 1MB of memory on our Windows 7 test rig.

A jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie -- who else? -- has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you'll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week -- but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple's updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!
